How often your water softener should recharge
"Regenerating" or "recharging" is the softener cleaning itself. How often it should happen depends on your water's hardness, your household and the softener's size.
What happens in a recharge
- Backwash: water flows backwards through the resin to loosen it and rinse out grit.
- Brine draw: salty water from the brine tank is pulled through the resin, swapping the trapped calcium and magnesium for sodium.
- Rinse: fresh water flushes the brine and the hardness down the drain.
- Refill: the brine tank is topped up with water, ready to dissolve salt for next time.
Timer or metered?
- Timer softeners recharge on a set number of days, whether you used much water or not.
- Metered (demand-initiated) softeners count the gallons that pass through and recharge only when the resin is close to full. They usually use less salt and water, because they don’t recharge early.
If yours has a dial with numbered days, it is a timer model. A screen showing gallons or “capacity remaining” usually means metered.
Working out your own interval
Daily hardness = people × 75 gallons × your water’s grains per gallon. Divide the softener’s capacity by that number. For four people in Phoenix (about 13.8 grains per gallon): 4 × 75 × 13.8 is about 4,140 grains a day, so a 32,000-grain softener lasts about 7 days. The calculator does this for any city.
Recharging too often?
- The hardness setting is higher than your water (see the hardness setting by city).
- The softener is too small for the household.
- A timer is set to a fixed short schedule.
- Water is running somewhere it shouldn’t: a dripping toilet or a leak passes through the meter too.
Common questions
- Why does my water softener regenerate every night?
- Some timer-based softeners are set to recharge on a fixed schedule regardless of use. Others are too small for the household, or the hardness setting is far too high. Check the setting first.
- How long does a regeneration take?
- It depends on the model; the manual lists each stage's length. Softeners are usually set to recharge in the early morning, when little water is being used.
- Can I use water while the softener regenerates?
- Yes, but a single-tank softener sends hard water to the house during the cycle, so it's best avoided for big jobs such as laundry.
